Minecraft 1.13 "Update Aquatic"
Shipwreck
It can generate upside down, right side up, or lying on its side. The ship is often missing a part - the bow or the stern, as well as the mast. But sometimes you can find fully intact ships too. The ship's hull can be made from any wood type found in the Overworld. However, each individual ship only uses two wood types.
What can you find in this structure?
There can be up to three chests inside a ship. One chest spawns in the bow, and two more in the stern. But sometimes a chest may be missing from its spot. The loot in the chests and its probability is shown below.

Underwater Ruins
Underwater ruins generate as ruined structures on the ocean floor. Although most underwater ruins generate underwater, in some cases they can also appear on land.
- Stone underwater ruins generate in temperate, cold, and frozen oceans, as well as their deep variants. The structures in these ruins are made mostly of stone blocks and their variants.
- Sandy underwater ruins generate in warm oceans. The structures in these ruins are made mostly of sandstone blocks and their variants.
What can you find in this structure?
Inside all types of structures except two, you can find a treasure chest. Sometimes the chest is buried under gravel or sand. It's also worth noting that drowned spawn abundantly around the ruins.
Drowned

Behavior
Drowned attack in melee combat. If they have a trident, they use it as a ranged weapon. Players cannot pick up thrown tridents, just as they cannot pick up arrows fired by skeletons. During the day, drowned only swim up to attack players in the water. The rest of the time they stay on the bottom of bodies of water, ignoring players on land or in boats. Drowned holding tridents keep throwing them at players even after leaving the water. At night and during thunderstorms, they come ashore and chase players and turtles, even if those are outside the water.
Drops
When a drowned dies, it drops 0 to 2 rotten flesh. The amount increases by one for each level of the Looting enchantment, up to a maximum of 5 with Looting III. It also drops 1 copper ingot with an 11% chance, which increases by 2% for each level of Looting. This drop is only available if the drowned is killed by a player or their tamed wolf.
Trident ![]()
- A trident can only be obtained by killing a drowned; it drops with an 8.5% chance.
- A new melee and ranged weapon that deals 9 damage in melee and 8 damage when thrown.
- A thrown trident can only be picked up by the player who threw it.
- Can have unique enchantments: Riptide pulls the player along with the trident when thrown underwater and lets you "fly" during rain. Impaling deals extra damage to aquatic mobs or any creature that's in rain or in water. Loyalty returns the trident to you after it's thrown. Channeling strikes the target with lightning on a hit - it only works during a thunderstorm.
Coral Reef

Sea Pickle ![]()
- Up to 4 pickles can be placed on one block.
- A single sea pickle placed underwater emits light level 6. Each additional pickle increases the light level by 3.
- Can be smelted into lime dye.
Coral Block
![]()
- There are 5 colors of coral blocks, and each one has its own name.
- Blue is tube coral.
- Pink is brain coral.
- Purple is bubble coral.
- Red is fire coral.
- Yellow is horn coral.
- There are also "dead" variants of each coral type.
- If it's not in contact with water, it turns into a dead coral block.
- Can only be mined with a pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch, otherwise a dead coral block drops.
Coral
![]()
- There are 5 colors of coral, with the same names as the coral blocks.
- Can be placed on all 4 sides of a block.
- There are also "dead" variants of each coral type.
- If it's not in contact with water, it turns into dead coral.
- Can only be mined with a pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch, otherwise a dead coral block drops.
Coral Fan
![]()
- A small variant of coral with the same properties and mechanics as regular coral.
Conduit

× 2) damage every 2 seconds.
Conduit Power
- This is a positive effect that combines Water Breathing, Night Vision, and Haste.
- The effect lets you breathe underwater, improves underwater visibility, and increases mining and combat speed underwater.
Dolphin

Behavior
Dolphins are attracted to items that fall into the water, which they push and chase after. If a player or another creature attacks a dolphin, the whole pod joins the fight against the attacker, attacking together like wolves. When a player feeds dolphins raw fish (cod or salmon), they swim toward the nearest shipwreck, buried treasure, or underwater ruins.
Drops
Killing a dolphin drops 0 to 1 raw cod. The amount of fish dropped increases by one for each level of the Looting enchantment. So killing a dolphin with a weapon enchanted with Looting III can yield up to 4 fish.
Dolphin's Grace
- The player gets this effect from staying near a dolphin for a while.
- Increases underwater movement speed.
Phantom
The phantom is a flying, hostile undead mob that attacks players who haven't slept for more than three in-game days. Like other undead mobs, phantoms are hurt by the Instant Health effect and healed by the Instant Damage effect, and they are also vulnerable to sunlight. The longer a player stays awake, the higher the chance of phantoms appearing. They spawn at night, in the Overworld, and the longer the player stays awake, the more of them appear.
Behavior
During the day, the phantom doesn't hide in shade or water, nor does it attack the player. Like most undead mobs, they can breathe underwater and don't drown. Having a cat nearby prevents phantoms from attacking the player. When phantoms get close to cats, they fly away, and you can hear the pet's characteristic hissing sound.
Drops
When a phantom is killed by a player or a tamed wolf, it drops 0-1 phantom membrane. The amount can be increased using the Looting enchantment. If a phantom is damaged but not killed, it can very rarely still drop loot if it later dies from sunlight.
Phantom Membrane ![]()
- Dropped when a phantom is killed.
- Used to repair elytra.
Potion of Slow Falling ![]()
- Brewed from a phantom membrane.
- Gives the player the Slow Falling effect for 1:30, though the duration can be extended to 4 minutes using redstone dust.
Turtle

Breeding
Turtles can breed on their own without the player's involvement. But you can also feed them seagrass to start the breeding process. Baby turtles will be attacked by most hostile mobs.
-
First stage: During breeding, one of the turtles heads to a spot within 9 blocks of where it spawned or hatched. There, it lays a clutch with an animation that mimics digging, containing 1 to 4 turtle eggs. If the distance is greater (for example, if you lead the turtle far away from its usual spot), it won't lay eggs.
-
Second stage: Turtle eggs go through three stages of maturing, after which baby turtles hatch. Each stage is accompanied by an animation of green particles around the egg and a cracking sound. The maturing process can take several in-game days. That said, the process speeds up significantly between the 3rd and 4th in-game days, and in the morning. An egg will only mature if it's placed on a regular or red sand block.
Baby turtles become adults in 20 minutes, and feeding them seagrass speeds up this process. Each seagrass fed to a baby turtle speeds up its growth by 10%.
Everyday uses
Turtles can be used to build a scute farm. Scutes are used for brewing potions and crafting a turtle shell.
Scute ![]()
- Dropped when a baby turtle grows into an adult.
Turtle Shell ![]()
- Crafted from 5 scutes.
- Worn as a helmet, giving 2 armor points and the Water Breathing effect for 10 seconds while underwater.
Potion of the Turtle Master ![]()
- Made by adding a turtle shell to an awkward potion on a brewing stand.
- Grants Slowness and Resistance IV. The Resistance IV effect significantly reduces the damage the player takes from enemies.
Advancements
- Catch a fish using a fishing rod.
- Catch a fish using a bucket.
- Throw a trident at a living creature.
- Throw a trident enchanted with Channeling at a villager so that lightning strikes it.
