Minecraft 1.16: The Nether Update
Netherite, Ancient Debris, and New Armor
Ancient Debris 
- A new ore that generates only in the Nether, at heights from -8 to -22.
- Smelting the ore yields netherite scrap, which is used to craft a netherite ingot.
- Does not burn in lava or fire.
- Cannot be blown up, but can be pushed.
Netherite Scrap 
- Used to craft a netherite ingot.
- Does not burn in lava or fire.
Netherite Ingot 
- Crafted from 4 gold ingots and 4 netherite scrap.
- Does not burn in lava or fire.
- Can be used to select a beacon effect.
Netherite Block 
- Crafted from 9 netherite ingots.
- Does not burn in lava or fire.
- Can be used to build a beacon.
Netherite Armor 
- The most durable and protective armor in the game.
- Does not burn in lava or fire.
- Crafted using a netherite ingot and diamond armor at a smithing table; enchantments are always carried over from the diamond armor to the netherite armor.
Netherite Tools 
- The most durable and fastest-mining tools in Minecraft.
- Do not burn in lava or fire.
- Crafted using a netherite ingot and a diamond tool at a smithing table; enchantments are always carried over from the diamond tool to the netherite tool.
Crimson Forest
The Crimson Forest is one of the new Nether biomes, drawing attention with its red and purple hues. Unlike other biomes, here you can find dark red fog and sparks shimmering in the air. The biome itself consists mostly of dense clusters of trees, and glowing mushrooms — shroomlights — can be found at their tops.
What can you find in this biome?
You'll often come across Hoglins and Piglins in this biome.
Crimson Nylium 
- The Nether's equivalent of a grass block.
- Can be created from netherrack by using bone meal on it while crimson nylium is nearby.
Crimson Stem 
- The blocks that make up the trunks of huge fungi.
- Has an animated texture.
- Immune to fire.
- Processing it yields crimson planks.
- Has a stripped variant, just like regular wood.
Nether Wart Block 
- Serves as the foliage of crimson trees.
- Crafted from 9 nether warts.
Crimson Hyphae 
- A variant of the stem with bark on all 6 sides.
- Has a stripped variant.
- Made from crimson and warped wood.
- Immune to fire.
Crimson Fungus 
- Can be placed on dirt, coarse dirt, farmland, podzol, grass, nylium, soul soil, and mycelium.
- Bone meal can grow it into a huge fungus if it's placed on crimson nylium.
- Can be composted.
Crimson Roots 
- Can be planted in a flower pot.
- Can be composted.
Shroomlight 
- Glows brightly and emits a light level of 15.
- Can be mined by hand or with any tool.
- Generates as part of a huge warped or crimson fungus.
- Can be composted.
Weeping Vines 
- Drops with a 33% chance. But if mined with a tool enchanted with Fortune III, they drop with a 100% chance.
- Can be climbed like vines.
- Placed on the underside of a block and grows downward.
- Can be grown or have its growth accelerated with bone meal.
Warped Forest
The Warped Forest is a Nether biome shrouded in dark blue fog. Here all the trees have a blue-turquoise tint, and blue-turquoise particles can be seen floating in the air. The surface of the biome is made of netherrack and warped nylium, on which warped roots and nether sprouts grow.
What can you find in this biome?
This place is fairly empty — you won't find any creatures here besides endermen. Because of this, endermen spawn here far more often than anywhere else in the Nether.
Warped Nylium 
- The Nether's equivalent of mycelium.
- Can be created from netherrack by using bone meal on it while warped nylium is nearby.
Warped Stem 
- The blocks that make up the trunks of huge fungi.
- Has an animated texture.
- Immune to fire.
- Processing it yields warped planks.
- Has a stripped variant, just like regular wood.
Warped Wart Block 
- Serves as the foliage of warped trees.
Warped Roots 
- Can be composted.
- Can be planted in a flower pot.
Nether Sprouts 
- Can be collected with shears.
- Can be composted.
Warped Fungus 
- Can be placed on dirt, coarse dirt, farmland, podzol, grass, nylium, soul soil, and mycelium.
- Can be used in a composter.
- Bone meal can be used on it to grow a huge fungus, if it's placed on warped nylium.
Shroomlight
- Emits a light level of 15.
- Can be mined by hand or with any tool.
- Generates as part of a huge warped or crimson fungus.
- Can be composted.
Twisting Vines 
- Drops with a 33% chance. But if mined with a tool enchanted with Fortune III, they drop with a 100% chance.
- Grows upward, unlike weeping vines.
- Can be climbed like vines.
- Can be grown or have its growth accelerated with bone meal.
Basalt Deltas
Another new Nether biome, and one that's pure chaos. It's full of lava, impassable basalt mountains, and dramatic changes in elevation. The airspace of the Basalt Deltas is filled with a dull lilac fog, through which particles resembling volcanic ash drift.
What can you find in this biome?
Basalt Deltas consist of a large number of columns and floating islands made of basalt and blackstone. Sometimes you can find deposits of netherrack and gravel on the surface of the deltas. Magma blocks generate around the lava seas and throughout the deltas, along with plenty of ghasts and magma cubes. Striders also live here.
Blackstone 
- Can be used instead of cobblestone to craft furnaces and stone tools.
- Can be crafted into stairs, walls, and slabs.
Polished Blackstone 
- Crafted from 4 blackstone or 2 polished blackstone slabs.
- Can be crafted into stairs, walls, slabs, and buttons.
Polished Blackstone Bricks 
- Crafted from 4 polished blackstone.
Basalt 
- Has a polished variant, crafted from 4 basalt.
Bastion Remnant
A new Nether structure that looks a bit like castle ruins. It can be found in every Nether biome except the Basalt Deltas. A bastion remnant cannot generate near a Nether fortress or near another bastion remnant. These ruins are generated from four types of structures: bridges (with lava below), hoglin stables, housing units, and treasure rooms. Each type has its own structure that makes it up. These structures can connect into a bastion via cave-like passages.
What can you find in this structure?
Piglins and piglin brutes spawn here, with the latter only able to spawn in a bastion. This is the only place in the game where you can find the "Pigstep" music disc, the piglin banner pattern, and netherite items. Gilded blackstone and gold blocks are also commonly found inside a bastion. There's a chance a magma cube spawner will generate on the lowest floor.
Gilded Blackstone 
- Only generates in bastion remnants.
- When mined, has a chance to drop 2-5 gold nuggets. The higher the Fortune enchantment, the higher the chance of dropping 5 nuggets from a single gilded blackstone.
Ruined Portal
This is the only naturally generated damaged portal in the Overworld or the Nether, and also the only generated structure that appears in more than one dimension. Ruined portals can generate large or small, and even underwater.
What can you find in this structure?
There will always be a loot chest and netherrack blocks near the portal. You may also find gold blocks and crying obsidian near the portal.

Crying Obsidian 
- Emits a light level of 10.
- Releases purple particle drips.
- Used to craft a respawn anchor.
- Can be obtained by trading with a piglin.
- Cannot be pushed by a piston.
Respawn Anchor
A new block crafted from 6 crying obsidian and three blocks of glowstone
. A respawn anchor can only be mined with a diamond or netherite pickaxe. For some reason, hoglins are afraid of the respawn anchor and steer clear of it.
Mechanics
A respawn anchor lets you set a respawn point in the Nether. This anchor can be charged up to level 4 using glowstone, and the charge level decreases by one each time a player respawns at the anchor. But be careful — using the anchor in the Overworld or the End will cause an explosion!
Everyday use
Besides its intended purpose, the anchor can be built into a redstone circuit, since it gives off a different redstone signal depending on its charge level.
Lodestone
You may not have known this, but a compass doesn't work in the Nether. That's what the lodestone block is for — it helps in this situation. Place it in the Nether or the Overworld, take out a compass, and right-click it. Now the compass will be enchanted and will always point to the lodestone. It's worth knowing that it can't be pushed by a piston, blown up, or destroyed, except by the Ender Dragon.
Hoglin/Zoglin
A hostile mob that attacks you under any circumstances, especially if there's a threat to its young. Upon death it drops raw porkchop, and if you're lucky, a piece of leather. When a hoglin attacks, its target is knocked back and tossed into the air, similar to an iron golem's attacks. It can turn into a zoglin if it ends up in the Overworld or the End and stays there for 15 seconds.
Breeding
Hoglins can be bred using crimson fungus. Baby hoglins make higher-pitched sounds and follow their parents or other adult hoglins. A baby takes 20 minutes to grow up; this can be sped up with crimson fungus.
Drops
Adult and baby hoglins drop 1-3 units of rotten flesh. The amount can increase by 1 for each level of the Looting enchantment, so with Looting III up to 6 units of rotten flesh will drop.
Piglin
These creatures resemble zombie pigmen, but unlike them, they're hostile even if left alone. Piglins are armed with crossbows and golden swords, including enchanted ones. They typically appear in groups of 1-6, in the crimson forest and the wastes of the Nether. Each piglin has a 20% chance of being a baby. Unfortunately — or perhaps fortunately — babies never grow up and stay babies forever.
Mechanics
If you don't want to provoke them, don't mine gold blocks, gold ore, or other blocks associated with gold near them. It's also forbidden to open any chests or storage near them, and don't forget to wear a piece of gold armor. When piglins end up in the Overworld or the End, they turn into zombified piglins after about 15 seconds. After the transformation a piglin keeps all its equipment, but zombified ones carrying crossbows can no longer use that weapon and will start attacking in melee instead.
Trading with the player
A player can trade with a piglin by throwing a gold ingot near it, or right-clicking it while holding a gold ingot. It will then pick up the gold ingot and examine it for six seconds, after which it will hand the player a random item from this list:

Strider
This is a friendly mob found only in the Nether. It possesses incredible cuteness and a love of lava. If you try to bring it to the Overworld, it first turns blue and then dies. The main feature of the strider is that it can walk on lava, which can be quite useful!
Breeding
Striders can be bred using warped fungus . A baby takes 20 minutes (in-game days) to grow up; this can be sped up with warped fungus. A pair of striders can breed again after 5 minutes.
Drops
When an adult strider dies, it drops 0-5 units of string. The maximum possible amount increases by 1 for each level of the Looting enchantment, up to 0-8 at level three. If the player puts a saddle on a strider, it's guaranteed to drop upon its death. If a strider spawns already wearing a saddle, it drops with an 8.5% chance. The Looting enchantment increases this chance by 1% per level, accordingly.
Everyday use
The player can ride a strider using a saddle. Similar to a saddled pig, the strider's movement is controlled by where the player looks while holding a warped fungus on a stick 
. A strider's speed on a flat lava surface is 4.14 blocks per second, and on solid ground it's 1.74 blocks per second.
Warped Fungus on a Stick
- Crafted from a fishing rod and a warped fungus.
- Loses 1 durability point each time the strider accelerates.
Soul Campfire 
- Crafted from sticks, wood, soul sand, or soul soil.
- Piglins run away from soul campfires.
- Deals twice as much damage as a regular campfire.
- Burns with blue flame and has a light level of 10.
Soul Lantern 
- Crafted from 9 iron nuggets and a soul torch.
- Emits a light level of 10.
- Piglins will avoid a soul lantern.
Soul Torch 
- Crafted from a stick, soul soil or soul sand, and coal.
- Emits a light level of 10.
- Piglins will avoid a soul torch.
Chain 
- Generates in bastion remnants and ruined portals (only in the Nether).
- Crafted from two iron nuggets and one ingot, arranged in a vertical line on a crafting table.
Target 
- Crafted from a hay bale and 4 redstone.
- The closer a projectile hits to the center, the stronger the signal produced.
- Conducts a redstone signal through itself.
- Can be broken even by hand.
Chiseled Nether Bricks 
- Made from two nether bricks.
Cracked Nether Bricks 
- Created by smelting nether bricks in a furnace.
Quartz Bricks 
- Can be made either at a stonecutter, or in a crafting grid from four blocks of quartz.
Advancements
- Explore all the Nether biomes.
- Hit the bullseye of a target from at least 30 meters away.
- Obtain crying obsidian.
- Obtain a netherite pickaxe.
- Enter a bastion remnant.
- Use a compass on a lodestone.
- Obtain a full set of netherite armor.
- Open 1 chest in a bastion remnant.
- Throw gold near an adult piglin.
- Fully charge a respawn anchor with 4 glowstone.
- Add ancient debris to your inventory.
Changes
Campfire 
- Now catches fire when hit by any burning projectile.
- Now drops food if the block was put out with a shovel or a water bottle while cooking.
- Raw food can now be placed on an extinguished campfire.
Dispenser 
- Can now saddle pigs, striders, and tamed horses, donkeys, and mules.
- Can now put armor on tamed horses.
- Can now hang carpets on tamed llamas.
- Can now hang chests on tamed llamas, donkeys, and mules.
- Can now shear mooshrooms and snow golems.
Soul Sand
- Rails placed on soul sand no longer slow down minecarts.
- A door, rail, button, torch, pressure plate, and redstone dust can now be placed on a soul sand block.
Snow 
- A door, rail, button, torch, pressure plate, and redstone dust can now be placed on a full block of snow formed from snow layers.
Bell
- Now rings when hit by any projectile.
Enderman 
- Now spawns in soul sand valleys and warped forests.
- Can now pick up nylium, roots, and fungi, but cannot pick up netherrack.
- Will now dodge the player's hits, even if the player isn't aiming at its head.
- No longer disappears while holding a block.
Fish 
- Fish now despawn when more than 64 blocks from the nearest player. However, if a fish was caught with a bucket or given a name with a name tag, it will not despawn, regardless of its distance from the nearest player.
Parrot 
- Now imitates the sounds of hostile mobs less often.
- Parrots no longer imitate the sounds of hostile mobs when peaceful difficulty is set.
Witch 
- A witch created by lightning striking a villager no longer despawns.
Bee 
- The bee's wandering radius around the hive has been reduced to 22 blocks.
- Bees now grow faster inside a hive.
