Update 1.19 "The Wild Update"!
A new underground structure, the warden, a swamp, and much more await you in the Minecraft 1.19 "The Wild Update"
Mangrove Swamp

This biome has a high density of trees, comparable to the jungle. The mangrove swamp mainly appears in warm regions near deserts and jungles.
What can you find in this biome?
The first thing you'll notice when entering the swamp is the appearance of new friendly mobs, frogs. Although the water may look murky, look closer and you'll spot tropical fish. The ground in this area is mostly mud, and mangrove trees have propagules you can use to grow your own mangrove trees. As with any other tree, mangrove wood can be crafted into planks and other useful items.
Mangrove Log ![]()
- Can be used to make planks and other wooden items, just like other wood types.
- Has a stripped version.
Mangrove Roots ![]()
- Can be waterlogged, like leaves.
Mangrove Leaves ![]()
- The leaves of mangrove trees.
Mangrove Propagule ![]()
- Used to grow mangrove trees.
- Can be placed both on land and in water. This makes the mangrove propagule the first tree sapling that can be planted underwater.
- Grows beneath the leaves of mangrove trees.
Mud ![]()
- Appears near rivers in mangrove swamp biomes.
- Can be created by using a water bottle on a dirt block.
- Can be placed above pointed dripstone to dry out and turn into clay.
Frogspawn ![]()
- Cannot be obtained in Survival mode.
- Formed after feeding two frogs a slimeball.
Frogs

Friendly mobs that spawn in swamps. There are 3 different frog variants, depending on the location where they were spawned or bred. Although they look cute, the main purpose of frogs is to obtain froglights.
Breeding
To breed frogs, create a small pond and place two frogs in it. Feed them, and they will start breeding. They will grow into frogs after 20 real-time minutes. The size and type of the pond doesn't matter, so build a convenient pond for breeding frogs and using them afterward.
Everyday uses
The main use for frogs is obtaining froglights. A frog pulls its prey to its mouth with its tongue, and the prey disappears, dropping either a slimeball or a froglight as a drop. Depending on the frog's variant, you can get one of 3 types of froglight.
Allay

The allay is a passive winged mob. It can move quickly and doesn't get stuck in mountains or swamps. You can find an allay in the prison of a woodland mansion or in makeshift cages near pillager outposts.
Mechanics
The allay has two slots. In the first slot, it holds the item you give it by right-clicking. In the second slot, it collects that same item within a 32-block radius of the player and brings it to your hands or to a note block that's constantly playing. Unlike cats and dogs, it will only follow you if the distance between you doesn't exceed 64 blocks. If the distance is greater, it loses track of you and stops interacting with the player. It also cannot teleport or pass through blocks. An interesting mechanic that might be a bug: a player who gave an item to an allay cannot harm it, but another player can kill this mob.
Breeding
To breed an allay, you'll need a jukebox with a music disc and an amethyst shard. When you turn on the jukebox, the allay will start dancing. If you give it an amethyst shard at that moment, another allay will appear nearby. You can repeat the breeding process after 3 minutes.
Everyday uses
Great for building interesting contraptions thanks to its interaction with note blocks and hoppers. Alternatively, you can use it as an item collector.
Ancient City

A new structure that generates in the Deep Dark biome at level -51, containing new blocks, enchanted books, and of course, the new mob - the Warden. This is a very dangerous place, and before visiting it, it's recommended to stock up on good armor, golden apples, and to avoid making unnecessary noise.
What can you find in this structure?
Despite its gloomy atmosphere, this structure has no living creatures except the Warden. It is very strong and aggressive, and relies only on sound, so avoid making unnecessary noise. There are also many new blocks here, such as the sculk sensor or the sculk shrieker. In addition to the new blocks, this structure contains a large number of chests with useful loot.

Sculk Sensor ![]()
- Reacts to sounds caused by things like placing a block, footsteps, or projectiles, and generates a redstone signal.
- The signal strength can be modified using a comparator, but by default the signal strength depends on the distance to the sound.
- Does not react to weather, such as rain.
- Wool can be used as sound insulation.
- More details here.
Sculk Shrieker ![]()
- Activated by a sculk sensor.
- Gives the player the Darkness effect when activated.
- Naturally generated sculk shriekers summon the warden from underground if activated multiple times.
- Has the ability to "shriek," producing ring-shaped particles.
- More details here.
Sculk Catalyst ![]()
- Spreads sculk at the nearest mob death location. The number of blocks spread depends on the amount of experience the mob can drop.
- More details here.
Sculk ![]()
- Sculk blocks grow near a sculk catalyst when mobs are killed.
- When broken with a tool without Silk Touch, it only drops experience.
Sculk Vein ![]()
- Generates on the top face of blocks, like snow.
- Nothing drops from a sculk vein when broken with a tool without Silk Touch.
- Has transparent parts in its texture, letting players tell which block the vein is on.
Echo Shard ![]()
- Can only be found in loot chests in the deep dark.
- Can be used to craft a recovery compass.
Recovery Compass ![]()
- A new type of compass that points to the player's last death location.
- If the player is not in the same dimension where their death occurred, the compass needle spins erratically.
- Crafted from one compass and eight echo shards.
Disc Fragment ![]()
- A fragment of the "5" music disc; collecting 9 of them lets you craft the full disc.
- Can only be found in chests in the deep dark.
Music Disc 5 ![]()
- Can only be obtained by restoring it from its broken state — combining nine fragments to get the full disc.
Warden

The warden is a powerful mob that lives in the ancient city. It relies on sound, so you'll need to stay quiet to avoid drawing its attention. It has a huge amount of health – 2.5 times more than the ender dragon. But despite its strength, it is not a boss.
Mechanics
- Spawning
- Drops
- Behavior
- Attacks
Spawning
The warden differs from other hostile mobs in that it has a unique spawning mechanic. When a player activates a naturally generated sculk shrieker 4 times and there is no warden within 48 blocks of that shrieker, a spawning animation plays and the warden appears.
Drops
Despite being a very powerful mob, its drops are unfortunately meager - just 1 sculk catalyst and 5 experience points.
Behavior
The warden is completely blind and relies on sound and smell. Every 6 seconds, all players within a 20-block radius are affected by the Darkness effect. The core in the warden's chest produces a low, pulsing heartbeat sound. It occurs along with the Darkness effect, and the angrier the warden gets, the faster it beats. The sounds the warden makes can be heard from a great distance. It tracks mobs within its detection range, not just those nearby. It listens for any vibrations, except those from armor stands, dying mobs, and wing-flapping sounds.
The warden has an anger system. It's measured by a number from 0 to 150 and increases when it detects vibrations. Hitting the warden adds 100 points to its anger. It scans its surroundings every 5-10 seconds while idle. At the end of a scan, if it detects a mob within 6 blocks horizontally and 20 blocks vertically, that creature gains 35 anger points.
Attacks
The warden has two types of attacks: one at close range, and one at long range. The melee attack charges in 0.9 seconds and can be used again 3 seconds after a hit. The warden can also deliver a ranged attack - a sonic boom that instantly hits its target and can be used again 1.3 seconds after a hit. The sonic boom can be recognized by the green and blue particles that burst from the warden's chest during the attack.

Sculk Sensor

A new block that reacts to sounds and emits a redstone signal. The sculk sensor generates naturally in the deep dark biome. It can also be found in certain parts of the ancient city. It can be mined by hand or with any item, but mining it with a hoe is fastest.
Mechanics
The sculk sensor picks up sound within a range of 8 blocks. It sends out a redstone signal whose strength depends on how far the sound traveled. It can detect various sounds, such as footsteps, item tosses, block breaking and placing, and more. However, some sounds may not be detected by the sculk sensor if they're made while sneaking. The sensor also doesn't detect sounds when the player is surrounded by wool blocks, and it ignores the sound of another sensor.
Everyday uses
A great tool for building automatic piston doors - no more pressure plates, just sound! Traps count too, as long as the victim isn't sneaking. Overall, a great block for building hidden contraptions.
Sculk Shrieker

The sculk shrieker emits a loud sound resembling a scream. It generates in the deep dark biome. It's a one-of-a-kind block that can be used to summon the warden. It can only be mined with a tool enchanted with Silk Touch, but only a naturally generated sculk shrieker can summon the warden.
Mechanics
The sculk shrieker is activated when a player steps on it or when a sculk sensor triggers it. You can prevent it from activating by placing wool blocks between the sensor and the shrieker. Every time the shrieker is activated, it raises the "warning" level. This warns the warden that someone is in its territory. After the shrieker activates, the player hears the warden's heartbeat and a distinctive "clicking" sound from the sensor, like an echo. The player is also given the Darkness effect for 12 seconds. The "warning" level is tracked individually for each player. This means that if another player summons the warden, your own level does not reset.
Some important points:
- The shrieker can be activated from a distance by shooting a projectile at the sensors.
- When a player's warning level reaches 4, the sculk shrieker summons the warden.
- The warden will only be summoned if there is no other warden within a 48-block radius
Sculk Catalyst

Another block from the sculk family that also spawns in the deep dark biome. It can be found in ancient city chests in quantities of 1 to 2. It can be mined by hand or with any item, but mining it with a hoe is fastest.
Mechanics
The sculk catalyst reacts to the death of any mob or player carrying experience, releasing soul-like particles and creating a patch of sculk and sculk veins around the death location; sculk sensors and sculk shriekers can also appear with a small chance. When creating these blocks, the sculk catalyst replaces grass block, dirt, coarse dirt, stone, end stone, deepslate, andesite, diorite, and granite.
Chest Boat ![]()
- Only one player can sit in a chest boat.
- Can be crafted from any available wood type, including the new mangrove wood.
- Its storage is the same as a regular chest.
Goat Horn ![]()
- Dropped when a goat rams into a tree or any other hard block.
- Hard blocks include copper ore, emerald ore, iron ore, logs, packed ice, or stone.
- Can play a loud sound that can be heard from far away.
- Each horn has its own sound, depending on the goat that dropped it.
- There are 8 different sound variants. 4 of them are triggered when goats scream. The names of all 8 variants are: "Ponder", "Sing", "Seek", "Feel", "Admire", "Call", "Yearn" and "Dream".
- Can be found at pillager outposts.
New Advancements
- Put three different types of frogs on a lead.
- Obtain all types of froglight.
- Have an allay deliver items to you.
- Kill any mob near a sculk catalyst.
- Sneak past a sculk sensor or a warden.
- Catch a tadpole in a water bucket.
Changes
Clay ![]()
- Now has a new renewable way to obtain it. It involves placing mud above a dripstone block with pointed dripstone underneath. The dripstone dries out the mud, turning it into clay.
