Update 1.17 "Caves & Cliffs: Part I"!
Axolotl

Axolotls live in lush caves. You can find them around clay blocks submerged in water. These creatures are quite aggressive toward other underwater mobs and will attack them. One of the axolotl's distinctive traits is its ability to play dead when it takes damage. For 10 seconds it will stay motionless, then gain the Regeneration I effect, provided it's in water at that moment. Axolotls come in five different colors: blue, cyan, gold, brown, and pink. The chance of an axolotl spawning in any of the four colors other than blue is 25% each, while the blue axolotl is the rarest, with a spawn chance of about 0.083%.
Breeding
Axolotls can be bred using a bucket of tropical fish. The offspring will inherit its color from one of the parents, or (with a 1⁄1200 chance) will be blue. Axolotls can breed every five minutes.
Goat

Breeding
Goats will follow a player within 10 blocks if the player is holding wheat. Feeding wheat to two goats produces a baby goat. If one of the goats is a screaming goat, there's a 50% chance the baby will be a screaming goat too. If both goats are screaming goats, the baby will always be a screaming goat. Breeding two regular goats gives a small chance of producing a screaming baby goat.
Glow Squid

Everyday use
Glow ink sacs can be used to decorate signs. If you apply this ink to a sign that already has text, the text will start glowing white. If you want to change the glow color, you can use a dye.
Copper

Copper Ore
Copper ore is usually found at heights from -16 to 112, and is especially common in dripstone cave biomes. It can generate anywhere in the Overworld in the form of ore veins. Mining copper ore requires a stone pickaxe or better. It drops 2 to 3 raw copper. The amount of copper dropped increases with each level of the Fortune enchantment, reaching a maximum of 12 with Fortune III. There are several types of copper ore, including copper-bearing deepslate copper ore
and regular copper ore
. They can be smelted into copper ingots, which are used in various crafting recipes.
Copper Oxidation
Copper blocks have four oxidation stages: the original, exposed, weathered, and oxidized. Over time a block progresses to the next oxidation stage. The oxidation process for copper blocks is determined purely by random chance and doesn't depend on conditions like rain, water, or being surrounded by other blocks. Any oxidation stage can be removed from a copper block with an axe or a lightning strike. Copper blocks of any kind can be waxed using honeycomb. Waxed blocks keep their current oxidation stage and look no different visually from regular copper blocks.

Lightning Rod

Mechanics
The lightning rod is designed to protect an area within a 128-block radius from lightning. Lightning strikes don't disappear, though — they just strike the lightning rod instead. The lightning rod also emits a redstone signal with a range of 15 blocks when struck by lightning. During a thunderstorm, the lightning rod produces white particles around itself. It's recommended to build a 3x3 platform out of fireproof blocks, since fire can spread.
Everyday use
The lightning rod can not only protect your house from lightning, but under certain conditions can also transform living creatures. For example, if you place a lightning rod next to a villager and summon lightning, the villager will turn into a witch. The same trick works on a creeper, turning it into a charged creeper.
Amethyst Geode

Amethyst geodes are underground, sphere-shaped formations lined on the inside with amethyst blocks. Each chunk has a 1⁄53 or 1⁄24 chance of generating an amethyst geode within it.
What can you find in this structure?
Amethyst shards, obtained only by mining amethyst clusters, can only be found in this sphere-shaped structure. Shards are the main crafting ingredient for tinted glass.
Tinted Glass ![]()
- Crafted from 4 amethyst shards and a glass block.
- Stained glass can't be used to craft tinted glass.
- Doesn't let light through.
- Unlike glass, this block doesn't disappear when broken, and doesn't require the Silk Touch enchantment.
Amethyst Block ![]()
- Crafted from 4 amethyst shards.
Budding Amethyst ![]()
- Generates amethyst crystals on its surface at random times. Crystals can form if there's a water or air source nearby, and if the block isn't touching another block.
- Can't be obtained with a pickaxe or any other tool, even with Silk Touch. Nothing drops from this block when it's broken.
- Instantly breaks when moved by a regular or sticky piston.
Small Amethyst Bud ![]()
- First growth stage of the amethyst cluster.
- Doesn't give amethyst shards when broken.
Medium Amethyst Bud ![]()
- Second growth stage of the amethyst cluster.
- Doesn't give amethyst shards when broken.
Large Amethyst Bud ![]()
- Third growth stage of the amethyst cluster.
- Doesn't give amethyst shards when broken.
Amethyst Cluster ![]()
- Gives 4 amethyst shards when mined with a pickaxe.
- Using a pickaxe enchanted with Fortune increases the number of amethyst shards dropped.
Calcite ![]()
- Generates in amethyst geodes between smooth basalt and amethyst.
Smooth Basalt ![]()
- Forms the outer layer of the amethyst geode.
- Can be obtained by smelting basalt.
Spyglass

A new tool in Minecraft that helps you observe distant objects. Crafted from two copper ingots and one amethyst shard.
Mechanics
When using the spyglass, a square outline appears in the player's field of view, creating an effect similar to wearing a carved pumpkin. You can remove this effect with the F1 key. The interface disappears automatically one minute after using the spyglass.
Deepslate ![]()
- A dark variant of stone that generates at heights from 0 to 16.
- Tougher to mine than regular stone.
- Mining this block drops cobbled deepslate.
- Can be obtained with a pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch.
Cobbled Deepslate ![]()
- Drops when deepslate is broken with a pickaxe.
- Has the same uses as cobblestone. It can also be used to craft stone tools, furnaces, and brewing stands.
- Has wall, stair, and slab variants.
- Can be smelted into deepslate.
Infested Deepslate ![]()
- Mining this block may spawn a silverfish.
Deepslate Ores
![]()
- Take twice as long to mine as their regular ore counterparts.
- Generate in place of regular ores when surrounded by deepslate.
- To help people with color blindness, the ore textures were changed.
Raw Metal Blocks
![]()
- Made from 9 raw (unsmelted) ores.
Pointed Dripstone ![]()
- Can be placed on the underside of a block to form a stalactite, or on the top side to form a stalagmite.
- Can be combined with other pointed dripstone to form longer stalactites and stalagmites.
- Breaks if hit with a thrown trident. It's also destroyed if you try to push it with a piston.
- Stalagmites break if there's no block beneath them, and deal damage to entities that land on them.
- Stalactites can fall and break if there's no block above them, and will also deal damage to entities they fall on.
- A stalactite will drip water or lava if there's a source of one of these liquids above it. A cauldron placed underneath will gradually fill with that liquid. Water can drip even without a water source above the stalactite, but in that case the cauldron won't fill. If the stalactite is in the Nether, it will drip lava.
- A stalactite can grow up to 7 blocks tall, but it won't grow if its top part is submerged in water.
Dripstone Block ![]()
- Crafted from four pointed dripstone.
Candle ![]()
- Crafted from honeycomb and string.
- Comes in 16 colors, just like wool.
- Up to four candles can be placed on a single solid block, similar to sea pickles, giving off a maximum light level of 12.
- Only candles of the same color can be placed on the same block.
- Can be placed on a whole cake.
Glow Item Frame ![]()
- Crafted from an item frame and a glow ink sac.
- Doesn't affect the light level, it just looks like it's glowing on its own.
- Items placed in the frame also glow.
Glow Lichen ![]()
- Can be mined with shears, otherwise it's destroyed.
- Found in caves.
- Emits light level 7.
- Unlike vines, glow lichen isn't destroyed by flowing water, and you can't climb it.
Glow Berries ![]()
- Restore 2 hunger points.
- Grow on cave vines.
- Can be used to feed foxes.
Azalea
![]()
- Has a flowering and a non-flowering variant.

- Grass can't spread onto it.
- Turns into regular dirt when used with a hoe.
- Using bone meal, you can grow hanging roots on the underside of the block.
Hanging Roots ![]()
- Can be mined with shears.
Spore Blossom ![]()
- Can only be placed on the underside of a block.
- Continuously emits green particles.
Big Dripleaf ![]()
- If an entity stands on this plant's leaf, it will hold their weight for 2 seconds. After 1.5 seconds the leaf starts to tilt, and 0.5 seconds after that the plant fully tilts and the entity falls.
- Can be mined even by hand.
- Can be planted on grass, dirt, or moss.
Moss Block ![]()
- Using bone meal on it can spawn various types of vegetation nearby: grass, moss, and azalea flowers.
- Destroyed if a piston tries to push it.
Moss Carpet ![]()
- Crafted from moss blocks.
- Similar to moss, but only 1 pixel thick and looks like a carpet.
Powder Snow ![]()
- A type of snow that entities fall through.
- Can be collected and placed with a bucket.
- If an entity is wearing leather boots, it won't fall through a block of powder snow. Rabbits and foxes are an exception to this rule and won't fall through powder snow either.
- Every piece of leather armor worn reduces freezing time, and wearing a full set eliminates all freezing damage.
- Skeletons that accidentally end up in powder snow turn into strays after a while.
- If a player is standing inside a block of powder snow, an icy border appears around their screen, and any mob inside it (except polar bears, bullfinches, and snow golems) starts freezing and takes damage after a short time.
- Players can still submerge in the snow while wearing leather boots if they press SHIFT.
- Entities that are on fire melt the block.
New Advancements
- Put three different types of frogs on a lead.
- Look at a parrot through the spyglass.
- Look at a ghast through the spyglass.
- Catch an axolotl in a bucket.
- Apply honeycomb to a copper block.
- Walk across powder snow without falling through.
- Look at the ender dragon through the spyglass.
- Apply glow ink to a sign with text.
- Protect a villager from a lightning strike without starting a fire.
